Meet the band
"Yacht Rock" Phil
Phil, your Cruise Director, is the heart and soul of Yacht-A-Rock. His smooth vocals and amazing guitar work, along with his joyful stage presence, make him the perfect frontman for the band.
Phil got his first guitar at age 7. He strummed his first chord and never stopped - high school bands in Maryland, heavy metal bands in LA in his 20's, acoustic guitar in Greenwich Village, NYC in his 30's, and a myriad of classic rock bands in New Jersey throughout his 40's.
But for the past 10 years, Phil's Spotify has been finely tuned to Yacht Rock. Living under the warm Orlando sunshine and rocking out with
Yacht-a-Rock is his dream come true.
To capture the smooth rhythms and soulful sounds of Yacht Rock, you need expert musicians - but more so - a band that effortlessly gels together to create those beautiful harmonies and iconic sounds. "Captain Keys" Carsten - Keyboards
Carsten, a man of few words, provides the tasty keyboard parts that make Yacht Rock so iconic.
According to Carsten, he "plays white and black keys randomly, and wishes he had a friend who owns a yacht."
"Chief Party Officer" Greg - Saxophone, Percussion, Vocals
Greg is the smooth operator behind Yacht-A-Rock’s sax and percussion section, blending silky sax solos with rhythmic beats that make you feel like you're cruising on a yacht in the ‘70s.
His musical journey started with him playing sax and shaking maracas before he could even spell "Yacht Rock"—and he's never looked back.
Known for his signature sax solos that make listeners swoon and his percussion that can turn a tambourine into a conversation starter, Greg’s musical abilities are as legendary as athletic stage performance. He once got a standing ovation from his cat for an impromptu bongo solo, which he still claims is his proudest achievement.
When he's not performing, Greg can be found sailing the seas of his imagination or making his living room feel like a tropical paradise. If you hear an impossibly smooth sax or catch a percussion rhythm that just feels like sunshine, it’s probably Greg doing his thing—creating the perfect soundtrack to your Yacht Rock dreams.
Fun Fact: Greg once played a sax solo so smooth that it brought high tide early. They called it "The Greg Effect."
"Ensign Groove" Rob - Drums
Rob is the engine of Yacht-A-Rock, providing the groove and foundation for all the other members.
Rob started taking private lessons over fifty years ago. While in school, he played in every opportunity available including Symphonic Band, Marching Band, and Jazz Band.
In the 70's a steady gig at Orlando's Once Upon a Stage Dinner Theater kept him busy and the 80's presented opportunities to sub with the Florida Symphony Orchestra, and tour with a variety of acts such as Liberace, Johnny Mathis, and Marilyn McCoo.
In the 90's, Rob took a hiatus from the music industry and went walk about up in Minnesota for a spell.
Back in Florida, Rob found his way to jam nights and, while surfing Facebook, responded to a post from Yacht Rock Phil looking for a drummer for a Yacht Rock project. Not too long afterward, he got the call to join the band.
Rob's fortunate to be married to Denise, Yacht-A-Rock's biggest fan.
Rob's musical tastes include R&B, rock, funk, jazz, fusion, ......and, of course, Yacht Rock!
"First Mate" Randy - Bass, Vocals
Randy provides the low end and high harmonies in Yacht-A-Rock's extensive playlist.
Randy is a bassist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and music director. During college, he played drums in the college jazz band, and was the lead guitarist for two years for the stage band at the Miss Missouri pageant. He also had a hit record in the summer of 1985 in Branson, Mo.
Randy switched to keyboards in late 90’s, providing improvised accompaniment for “The Instant Musical”, a hit show featuring a
completely improvised Broadway musical, based on audience suggestions.
Finally, Randy jumped back to his first love, the bass guitar. On Sundays, you can find him leading the band at church. Randy has performed with multiple groups around the Orlando area, but nothing compares to playing with Yacht-A-Rock.
When asked for the three words that best describe him, Randy replied "Unable to follow directions."
